In this way, they were small companies composed of a maximum of 10 members who lived off popular contributions during their outdoor performances. In an identical way with conventional themes of the time, such as jealousy, adultery, affection and even some pieces of Roman and Greek comedies lost in time. Incidentally, many of these Roman and Greek plays had characters who satirized local scandals, events of the time, regional tastes, various cultural jokes, etc.

Burlesque has historical roots in America’s minstrel culture, dating back to the 1840s. However, the version we know today is a marriage of vaudevillian humor and striptease. It became popular in the early 1900s when performers (mostly women) went to clubs and Broadway venues with their own music, dancing and provocative nudity. The Prohibition era took its toll on the burlesque industry, as abstemious politicians and authority figures questioned both the performers and club owners who made burlesque possible. Fortunately, the genre dates back to the 1950s, when women like Sally Rand, Gypsy Rose Lee, Tempest Storm, Lili St. Cyr and Blaze Starr emerged as icons.

We dived into the photographic archives to show a visual touch of 1950s burlesque, check out some goddesses:

In contrast, in modern times, we have burlesque star Dita Von Teese. Because she revolutionized the current burlesque art, inspired by actresses from the Hollywood Golden Age, as we mentioned above, reinvented the figure of pin-up women from the 40s and 50s. Today she is considered a sex symbol of luxury and charm!
