The first pillows date back to 7,000 BC and were discovered in ancient Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt, specifically in the tombs of the pharaohs.
Chinese dynasties used materials such as wood, bronze, bamboo, and porcelain for their pillows. They favored these materials because the theory was that soft materials robbed vitality out of the body and caused problems, from poor blood circulation to not fulfilling its function of keeping demons away, and therefore they preferred pillows made of hard materials.
In parallel, the wealthy people of ancient Greece and Rome began to use hay, reed, and feathers to make more comfortable pillows.
Already in the 18th century, pillows became commonplace, being used for example to kneel in the church. Even the Bibles rested on their own pillow.
Today they are mass-manufactured and each home has several for rest, decoration and masturbation among other things.
