Laverne Cox is an American actress, producer and LGBT activist. Cox achieved most prominence for her role as Sophia Burset in the Netflix series “Orange Is the New Black” where she starred Nude. This role earned her an Emmy nomination in 2014, thus making her the first transsexual nominated for an award in the acting category. In 2015, Cox was included in the list of the hundred most influential people of the year according to Time magazine.
Laverne waited for the fate of a depressed and cornered victim, when she, as a boy, constantly came to school in a skirt and makeup. This angered everyone: teachers, parents and classmates. But Cox continued to look in line with her inner world and, having moved to New York, had sex change surgery.
Her other dream was to become an actress. At first she was offered the role of prostitutes and pervert — just as, in the opinion of many writers, the transgender can seamlessly coexist with other heroes in the series. And in 2013, she was invited to the sitcom “Orange Is the New Black”. In this story, Cox had to play transgender Sophia Burset, and the artist considered this project a real success and gave her all on the set!
The actress also became one of the heroines of John Legend’s inspirational video You & I (Nobody in the World), the heroines of which were women of different ages and nationalities.
Cox plans to make a film that will tell the truth about transgender people. It’s all about the picture: we’re used to seeing them as desperate victims of violence or the sex industry, and Laverne knows that among these people there are some excellent doctors, nurses, lawyers, mothers and sisters who, like everyone else, want love, understanding and protection.
Laverne Cox was awarded the GLAAD special award for her work as an advocate for LGBT people. She later made history by becoming the first transgender person to appear on the cover of Time magazine.
She is not only a talented actress and a gorgeous woman: she is surprisingly sensible about her fame. Cox understands that her success is the exception rather than the rule, and therefore seeks to become the voice of people whose problems are close to her.
