We are used to the idea that it is important to seek quality information in the most varied areas: profession, culture, politics and even humor (who never felt successful for knowing great sources of memes?). All this helps to form a person who is more complete with himself and pleasant to live with. However, we rarely hear about how essential it is to be informed about sexuality. Studying about sex, even just a little bit, increases your chances of being a good person in bed.
One of the great nerds of sexual science was Alfred Kinsey (1894-1956), an American researcher who mapped the sexual diversity of the population. Born at a time when only traditional sex was validated, he never conformed to all the taboos imposed on sexuality. His life goal was for people to have more and better sex. For this, he cataloged detailed information about the intimacy of at least 18,000 people. Despite his methods being the target of some criticism, Kinsey consolidated the idea that “mom and dad” sex and concepts such as homo and hetero do not reflect the desire of most people.
While some research shows that our sexuality is not always fixed, others point out that sexual fantasies and fetishes may be more common than we think. A study by researcher Justin Lehmiller, entitled Tell Me What You Want, was done with more than 4 thousand people and showed that 89% of the participants would like to have a threesome (phew, I thought it was just me and half a dozen other perverts! ). Sexual fantasies related to BDSM and sex in public places were also mentioned a lot by the participants.
Don’t think that the science of sex is only studied by gringos. In Brazil, psychiatrist and sexologist Carmita Abdo is responsible for some of the greatest research on sexuality. In her book Descobrimento Sexual do Brasil, she shows the result of a study carried out with more than 7,000 people in the early 2000s. Two other major surveys of hers, Mosaico Brasil and Mosaico 2.0, updated this panel. The latter, carried out in 2016, showed that for the absolute majority of people, sex is very important: 95.3% of respondents consider it essential for the couple’s harmony; of these, 96.2% were men and 94.5% were women. If you’re wondering where all these women are hiding, maybe it’s behind their own shyness!
One of the most recent initiatives underway in Brazil is Rati Educação, a sexual education platform that offers online courses on topics such as ejaculation control and masturbation techniques and oral sex. Answering the questionnaire is a good opportunity to get to know yourself better and think about aspects of your sex life.
