Tinashe was the eldest child of teachers Michael and Aimee Kachingwe. Her father teaches acting at California state Polytechnic University, a first-generation immigrant from the Shona people living in Zimbabwe. Tinashe’s mother has Danish, Norwegian and English heritage, teaches physical therapy at California state University in Northridge. Her parents met each other on a blind date while studying at the University of Iowa. The name Tinashe from Shona language translates as “We are with God”. Besides her family there are two brothers: Tūlānī and Kudzai.
Tinashe and her family moved to Los Angeles, California when she was eight years old. She attended Crescent valley high school, graduating a year early to pursue a full-time musical career. As a child, she often faced bullying from peers at school and even missed final exams.
